The Peace Research Centre (CIP-FUHEM) has been a leader in Spain in research on the conflict cycle: prevention, management and post-conflict rehabilitation. CIP’s focus is on conflict prevention as a means of building peace in countries recovering from war and identifying lessons that might help prevent an escalation in current crises. The bulk of our conflict prevention work is focused on Latin America.

After the 9/11, M/11 and other terrorist attacks, the fight against transnational terrorism has become part of a global effort led by the international community. CIP conducts regular analyses in this area, looking at the causes and characteristics of this phenomenon and the threat that the antiterrorist fight and the “war on terror” could pose with respect to personal freedom and human rights.
One of CIP’s research focuses is the promotion of non-violent alternatives to conflict resolution, using peace and development education activities as tools. These activities are meant to promote a change in public opinion with respect to conflict and development. CIP has been working in this area for more than a decade, facilitating training sessions and producing an extensive body of research to become an important source of information on peace education.

Showing support for policies and initiatives in favour of the multilateral system has been one of the hallmarks of CIP’s work over the past two decades. Despite the numerous challenges faced by the multilateral system in recent years, CIP believes that the use of dialogue and negotiation in conflict resolution situations finds its most natural expression through the system of international institutions. The Centre seeks to strengthen multilateralism through research and analysis on the United Nations, its proposed reforms and the opportunities presented by other international organizations in favour of peace and security.
